Composite Fillings

Composite fillings are ceramic and plastic compounds that are tooth-colored and are used to restore decaying teeth as well as other cosmetic dental procedures.

They have become more common over the years—the older method being silver fillings, which are not aesthetically pleasing.

Traditionally, composite fillings were only used on front teeth, because they were not strong enough to withstand long-term wear and tear that the back teeth endure. However, technology has advanced, and composite fillings are becoming more and more popular. It’s also a more versatile form of dental treatment, in that it can be used for a variety of procedures, including filling cavities, restoring worn teeth, or repairing a chipped or broken tooth. They can be shaped and colored to resemble an actual tooth, which is a feature that silver fillings cannot provide.

Composite fillings can be completed in one appointment. We make sure the tooth is completely dry, remove the decayed portion, place the composite resin in multiple layers, harden each layer individually, reshape & polish the composite material, and occasionally will place a protective layer to prevent long-term staining. We can help you review your options, and make the best decision for your dental needs.
